RESUMO

In this study, we investigated the combined effects of hypoxia and NPs on the water flea Daphnia magna, a keystone species in freshwater environments. To measure and understand the oxidative stress responses, we used acute toxicity tests, fluorescence microscopy, enzymatic assays, Western blot analyses, and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis. Our findings demonstrate that hypoxia and NPs exhibit a negative synergy that increases oxidative stress, as indicated by heightened levels of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant enzyme activity. These effects lead to more severe reproductive and growth impairments in D. magna compared to a single-stressor exposure. In this work, molecular investigations revealed complex pathway activations involving HIF-1α, NF-κB, and mitogen-activated protein kinase, illustrating the intricate molecular dynamics that can occur in combined stress conditions. The results underscore the amplified physiological impacts of combined environmental stressors and highlight the need for integrated strategies in the management of aquatic ecosystems.

Plant disease control mainly relies on pesticides. In this study, a series of coumarin derivatives containing hydrazone moiety were designed and synthesized. The synthesized compounds were characterized and used to evaluate the antifungal activity against four pathogens, Botrytis cinerea, Alternaria solani, Fusarium oxysporum, and Alternaria alternata. The results showed that the inhibition rate of some compounds at 100 µg/mL in 96 hours reached around 70% against A. alternata, higher than that of positive control. The corresponding EC50 values were found at around 30 µg/mL. Finally, the compound 3b was screened out with the lowest EC50 value (19.49 µg/mL). The analysis of SEM and TEM confirmed that the compound 3b can obviously damage the morphological structure of hyphae, resulting in the depletion of the cells by the destruction of membranous structure and leakage of cytoplasmic contents. RNA sequencing showed that compounds 3b mainly affected the pentose phosphate pathway, which in turn caused damage to the cell membrane wall structure and function. Molecular docking showed that compounds 3b fitted the binding pocket of yeast transketolase and interacted with lysine at the hydrazone structure. Our results suggested that the introduction of hydrazone was an effective strategy for the design of novel bioactive compounds.

Halide perovskites have shown great potential in X-ray detection due to outstanding optoelectronic properties. However, finding a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable method for handling end-of-life devices has remained challenging. Here, a "One-Click Restart" eco-friendly recycling strategy is introduced for end-of-life perovskite X-ray detectors. This method, utilizing water, allows for the recapture and reuse of both perovskite and conductor materials. The process is straightforward and environmentally friendly, eliminating the need for further chemical treatment, purification, additional additives or catalysts, and complex equipment. A sustainable device cycle is developed by reconstructing flexible perovskite membranes for wearable electronics from recycled materials. Large-scale, flexible membranes made from metal-free perovskite DABCO-N2H5-I3 (DABCO = N-N'-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium) achieve remarkably impressive average sensitivity of 6204 ± 268 µC Gyair -1 cm-2 and a low detection limit of 102.3 nGyair s-1, which makes highly effective for X-ray imaging. The sensitivity of recycled flexible devices not only matches that of single-crystal devices made with fresh materials but also ranks as the highest among all metal-free perovskite X-ray detectors. "One-Click Restart" applies to scalable flexible devices derived from aged single-crystal counterparts, offering significant cost, time, and energy savings compared to their single-crystal equivalents. Such advantages significantly boost future market competitiveness.

Background: Previous studies on the effect of global warming on the global burden of disease have mainly focussed on the impact of high temperatures, thereby providing limited evidence of the effect of lower temperatures. Methods: We adopted a three-stage analysis approach using data from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study. First, we explored the global burden of disease attributable to low temperatures, examining variations by gender, age, cause, region, and country. Second, we analysed temporal trends in low-temperature-related disease burdens from 1990 to 2019 by meta-regression. Finally, we fitted a mixed-effects meta-regression model to explore the effect modification of country-level characteristics. Results: In 2019, low temperatures were responsible for 2.92% of global deaths and 1.03% of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), corresponding to a death rate of 21.36 (95% uncertainty interval (UI) = 18.26, 24.73) and a DALY rate of 335 (95% UI = 280, 399) per 100 000 population. Most of the deaths (85.12%) and DALYs (94.38%) attributable to low temperatures were associated with ischaemic heart disease, stroke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In the last three decades, we observed an upward trend for the annual number of attributable deaths (P < 0.001) and a downward trend for the rates of death (P < 0.001) and DALYs (P < 0.001). The disease burden associated with low temperatures varied considerably among regions and countries, with higher burdens observed in regions with middle or high-middle socio-demographic indices, as well as countries with higher gross domestic product per capita and a larger proportion of ageing population. Conclusions: Our findings emphasise the significance of raising public awareness and prioritising policies to protect global population health from the adverse effects of low temperatures, even in the face of global warming. Particular efforts should be targeted towards individuals with underlying diseases (e.g. cardiovascular diseases) and vulnerable countries or regions (e.g. Central Asia and central Europe).

Ferroptosis has been confirmed to be associated with various diseases, but the relationship between ferroptosis and atherosclerosis (AS) remains unclear. Our research detailly clarified the roles of ferroptosis in three continuous and main pathological stages of AS respectively (injury of endothelial cells [ECs], adhesion of monocytes, and formation of foam cells). We confirmed that oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), the key factor in the pathogenesis of AS, strongly induced ferroptosis in ECs. Inhibition of ferroptosis repressed the adhesion of monocytes to ECs by inhibiting inflammation of ECs. Ferroptosis also participated in the formation of foam cells and lipids by regulating the cholesterol efflux of macrophages. Further research confirmed that ox-LDL repressedthe activity of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), the classic lipid peroxide scavenger. Treatment of a high-fat diet significantly induced ferroptosis in murine aortas and aortic sinuses, which was accompanied by AS lesions and hyperlipidemia. Treatment with ferroptosis inhibitors significantly reduced ferroptosis, hyperlipidemia, and AS lesion development. In conclusion, our research determined that ox-LDL induced ferroptosis by repressing the activity of GPX4. Antiferroptosis treatment showed promising treatment effects in vivo. Ferroptosis-associated indexes also showed promising diagnostic potential in AS patients.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have examined the relation between air pollution (NOx, NO2, PM2.5, PM2.5-10, and PM10) and adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs). There's increasing evidence that air pollution increases the risk of APOs. However, the results of these studies are controversial, and the causal relation remains uncertain. We aimed to assess whether a genetic causal link exists between air pollution and APOs and the potential effects of this relation. METHODS: A novel two-sample Mendelian randomisation (MR) study used pooled data from a large-scale complete genome correlation study. The primary analysis method was inverse variance weighting (IVW), which explored the expose-outcome relationship for assessing single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with air pollution. Further sensitivity analysis, including MR-PRESSO, MR-Egger regression, and leave-one analysis, was used to test the consistency of the results. RESULTS: There was a significant correlation between air pollution-related SNPs and APOs. A robust causal link was found between genetic susceptibility to air pollution and APOs. CONCLUSIONS: Our MR analysis reveals a genetic causal relation between air pollution and APOs, which may help provide new insights into further mechanisms and clinical studies in air pollution-mediated APOs.

The serotonin signaling system plays a crucial role in regulating the ontogeny of crustaceans. Here, we describe the effects of different concentrations of the 5-hydroxytryptamine 1A receptor antagonist (WAY-100635) on the induced antipredation (Rhodeus ocellatus as the predator), morphological, behavioral, and life-history defenses of Daphnia magna and use transcriptomics to analyze the underlying molecular mechanisms. Our results indicate that exposure to WAY-100635 leads to changes in the expression of different defensive traits in D. magna when faced with fish predation risks. Specifically, as the length of exposure to WAY-100635 increases, high concentrations of WAY-100635 inhibit defensive responses associated with morphological and reproductive activities but promote the immediate negative phototactic behavioral defense of D. magna. This change is related to the underlying mechanism through which WAY-100635 interferes with gene expression of G-protein-coupled GABA receptors by affecting GABBR1 but promotes serotonin receptor signaling and ecdysteroid signaling pathways. In addition, we also find for the first time that fish kairomone can significantly activate the HIF-1α signaling pathway, which may lead to an increase in the rate of immediate movement. These results can help assess the potential impacts of serotonin-disrupting psychotropic drugs on zooplankton in aquatic ecosystems.

INTRODUCTION: The sesquiterpene glycosides (SGs) from Dendrobium nobile Lindl. have immunomodulatory effects. However, there are no studies on the growth conditions affecting its contents and quantitative analysis methods. OBJECTIVE: In the present study, a quantitative analysis method for six SGs from D. nobile was established. We explored which growth conditions could affect the contents of SGs, providing a basis for the cultivation and clinical application of D. nobile. METHODS: Firstly, based on the optimization of mass spectrometry parameters and extraction conditions for six SGs in D. nobile, a method for the determination of the contents of six SGs was established using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-QqQ-MS/MS) in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. Then, the methodology of the established method was validated. Secondly, the established method was applied to determine the contents of six SGs from 78 samples of D. nobile grown under different growth conditions. Finally, chemometrics analysis was employed to analyze the results and select optimal growth conditions for D. nobile. RESULTS: The results indicated significant variations in the contents of SGs from D. nobile grown under different growth conditions. The primary factors influencing SG contents included age, geographical origin, altitude, and epiphytic pattern. CONCLUSION: Therefore, the established method for determining SG contents from D. nobile is stable. In particular, the SG contents were relatively high in samples of 3-year-old D. nobile grown at an altitude of approximately 500 m on Danxia rocks in Chishui, Guizhou.

Identifying the precise moment before the onset of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a significant challenge in the medical field. The existing biomarkers fall short of pinpointing the critical point preceding HCC formation. This study aimed to determine the exact tipping point for the transition from cirrhosis to HCC, identify the core Dynamic Network Biomarker (DNB), and elucidate its regulatory effects on HCC. A spontaneous HCC mouse model was established to mimic HCC formation in patients with chronic hepatitis. Using the DNB method, C1q and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) related 1 (C1QTNF1) protein was identified as the key DNB at the crucial tipping time of spontaneous HCC development. Both in vitro and in vivo studies showed that C1QTNF1 could inhibit tumor growth. Overexpression of C1QTNF1 before the tipping point effectively prevented HCC occurrence. Patients with elevated C1QTNF1 expression demonstrated improved overall survival (OS) (P = 0.03) and disease-free survival (DFS) (P = 0.03). The diagnostic value of C1QTNF1 was comparable to that of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.84; sensitivity 85%; specificity 80%). Furthermore, our research indicated that platelet-expressed C1QTNF1 is involved in cancer-associated signaling pathways. Our findings introduce a novel perspective by highlighting C1QTNF1 as the pivotal biomarker at the tipping point of primary HCC formation using DNB. We propose C1QTNF1 as a prognostic biomarker for HCC, potentially influencing tumor development through a platelet-related cancer signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke depression (PSD) affects approximately one-third of stroke survivors, leading to adverse outcomes in rehabilitation, reduced quality of life, and increased mortality rates. Despite these implications, the underlying causes of PSD remain unclear, posing challenges for prevention and treatment. Echinacoside (ECH), a natural compound with known neuroprotective and antidepressant properties, holds significant therapeutic potential for PSD. However, the precise mechanism of its action remains unknown. PURPOSE: To unravel the specific mechanism through which ECH alleviates PSD by exploring the intricate interplay between ECH and Nrf2, as well as its impact on the BDNF/TrkB signaling axis. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A rat PSD model was established though middle cerebral artery occlusion coupled with chronic unpredictable mild stress, followed by ECH treatment. The rats' depressive state was evaluated using the sucrose preference test and force swimming test. Brain damage was assessed through TTC staining, Nissl staining, and TUNEL assay. The multifaceted mechanism of ECH in PSD was investigated using immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, RT-qPCR, dual-luciferase assay, and western blotting. Additionally, the interaction between ECH and Nrf2 was explored through molecular docking and microscale thermophoresis. RESULTS: Our findings unveiled a novel facet of ECH action, demonstrating its unique ability to upregulate Nrf2 through acetylation within the hippocampus of PSD-affected rats (p < 0.05). Moreover, ECH showcased its distinctive potential by enhancing BDNF transcriptional activity, activating the BDNF/TrkB signaling axis, and orchestrating a comprehensive response against oxidative stress and apoptosis, thereby alleviating PSD symptoms in rats (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study not only provides insights into the pivotal role of Nrf2 in mediating the BDNF/TrkB axis activation by ECH but also highlights the novelty of ECH's mechanism in addressing PSD. The elucidation of these unique aspects positions ECH as a groundbreaking candidate for further exploration and development in the realm of PSD intervention.

BACKGROUND: Meteorological factors are associated with various health outcomes. However, it remains uncertain whether ambient temperature affects animal aggressive behaviors and causes mammalian-related injuries (MRI) in humans. The study aimed to examine the effect of daily mean temperature on MRI in Guangzhou, China. METHODS: Individual cases of MRI were obtained from Guangzhou Injury Surveillance System during 2014-2019. A combination of a distributed lag nonlinear model and conditional quasi-Poisson regression, implemented within a time-stratified case-crossover design, was employed to evaluate the association between temperature and MRI. Subgroup analyses were conducted by sex, age group, education level, and types of mammals. RESULT: This study included 24,206 MRI cases among which 89.7 % were caused by cats or dogs. We observed a nonlinear relationship between daily mean temperature and MRI. The impact of high temperatures was most pronounced on the current day and remained statistically significant on the next day. Compared with the reference temperature with a minimum risk of injuries (9.3 °C, approximately 2nd percentile of temperature), 75th percentile of temperature (27.4 °C) exerted the greatest relative risk (RR) of injuries (RR = 1.45, 95 % CI: 1.25-1.68) over lag 0-1 days. In subgroup analyses, the effects of high temperatures among males and females were similar. Individuals aged 15-34 years and 35-59 years were more susceptible to MRI at high temperatures compared to other age groups. The risk of injuries caused by cats or dogs consistently increased with high temperatures. We did not find significant impacts of low temperatures. CONCLUSION: Short-term heat exposure plays an important role in the occurrence of MRI. The findings highlight the importance of enhancing public awareness regarding the high temperature-associated hazards posed by mammals. There is a need for enhanced regulations and measures on the management for cats and dogs to mitigate the harm caused in hot seasons.

With significant advancements in high-resolution mass spectrometry, there has been a substantial increase in the amount of chemical component data acquired from natural products. Therefore, the rapid and efficient extraction of valuable mass spectral information from large volumes of high-resolution mass spectrometry data holds crucial significance. This study illustrates a targeted annotation of the metabolic products of alkaloid and sesquiterpene components from Dendrobium nobile (D. nobile) aqueous extract in mice serum through the integration of an in-houses database, R programming, a virtual metabolic product library, polygonal mass defect filtering, and Kendrick mass defect strategies. The research process involved initially establishing a library of alkaloids and sesquiterpenes components and simulating 71 potential metabolic reactions within the organism using R programming, thus creating a virtual metabolic product database. Subsequently, employing the virtual metabolic product library allowed for polygonal mass defect filtering, rapidly screening 1705 potential metabolites of alkaloids and 3044 potential metabolites of sesquiterpenes in the serum. Furthermore, based on the chemical composition database of D. nobile and online mass spectrometry databases, 95 compounds, including alkaloids, sesquiterpenes, and endogenous components, were characterized. Finally, utilizing Kendrick mass defect analysis in conjunction with known alkaloids and sesquiterpenes targeted screening of 209 demethylation, methylation, and oxidation products in phase I metabolism, and 146 glucuronidation and glutathione conjugation products in phase II metabolism. This study provides valuable insights for the rapid and accurate annotation of chemical components and their metabolites in vivo within natural products.

Halide perovskites are emerging as promising materials for X-ray detection owing to their compatibility with flexible fabrication, cost-effective solution processing, and exceptional carrier transport behaviors. However, the challenge of removing lead from high-performing perovskites, crucial for wearable electronics, while retaining their superior performance, persists. Here, we present for the first time a highly sensitive and robust flexible X-ray detector utilizing a biocompatible, metal-free perovskite, MDABCO-NH4I3 (MDABCO = methyl-N'-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium). This wearable X-ray detector, based on a MDABCO-NH4I3 thick membrane, exhibits remarkable properties including a large resistivity of 1.13 × 1011 Ω cm, a high mobility-lifetime product (µ-τ) of 1.64 × 10-4 cm2 V-1, and spin Seebeck effect coefficient of 1.9 nV K-1. We achieve a high sensitivity of 6521.6 ± 700 µC Gyair-1 cm-2 and a low detection limit of 77 nGyair s-1, ranking among the highest for biocompatible X-ray detectors. Additionally, the device exhibits effective X-ray imaging at a low dose rate of 1.87 µGyair s-1, which is approximately one-third of the dose rate used in regular medical diagnostics. Crucially, both the MDABCO-NH4I3 thick membrane and the device showcase excellent mechanical robustness. These attributes render the flexible MDABCO-NH4I3 thick membranes highly competitive for next-generation, high-performance, wearable X-ray detection applications.

Meeting the ever-increasing food demands of a growing global population while ensuring resource and environmental sustainability presents significant challenges for agriculture worldwide. Arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis (AMS) has emerged as a potential solution by increasing the surface area of a plant's root system and enhancing the absorption of phosphorus, nitrogen nutrients, and water. Consequently, there is a longstanding hypothesis that rice varieties exhibiting more efficient AMS could yield higher outputs at reduced input costs, paving the way for the development of Green Super Rice (GSR). Our prior research study identified a variant, OsCERK1DY, derived from Dongxiang wild-type rice, which notably enhanced AMS efficiency in the rice cultivar "ZZ35." This variant represents a promising gene for enhancing yield and nutrient use efficiency in rice breeding. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of biomass, crop growth characteristics, yield attributes, and nutrient absorption at varying soil nitrogen levels in the rice cultivar "ZZ35" and its chromosome single-segment substitution line, "GJDN1." In the field, GJDN1 exhibited a higher AM colonization level in its roots compared with ZZ35. Notably, GJDN1 displayed significantly higher effective panicle numbers and seed-setting rates than ZZ35. Moreover, the yield of GJDN1 with 75% nitrogen was 14.27% greater than the maximum yield achieved using ZZ35. At equivalent nitrogen levels, GJDN1 consistently outperformed ZZ35 in chlorophyll (Chl) content, dry matter accumulation, major nutrient element accumulation, N agronomic efficiency (NAE), N recovery efficiency (NRE), and N partial factor productivity (NPFP). The performance of OsCERK1DY overexpression lines corroborated these findings. These results support a model wherein the heightened level of AMS mediated by OsCERK1DY contributes to increased nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium accumulation. This enhancement in nutrient utilization promotes higher fertilizer efficiency, dry matter accumulation, and ultimately, rice yield. Consequently, the OsCERK1DY gene emerges as a robust candidate for improving yield, reducing fertilizer usage, and facilitating a transition towards greener, lower-carbon agriculture. Climate warming influences the biological activities of aquatic organisms, including feeding, growth, and reproduction, thereby affecting predator-prey interactions. This study explored the variation in thermal sensitivity of anti-predator responses in two cladoceran species with varying body sizes, Daphnia pulex and Ceriodaphnia cornuta. These species were cultured with or without the fish (Rhodeus ocellatus) kairomone at temperatures of 15, 20, 25, and 30 °C for 15 days. Results revealed that cladocerans of different body sizes exhibited varying responses to fish kairomones in aspects such as individual size, first-brood neonate size, total offspring number, average brood size, growth rate, and reproductive effort. Notably, low temperature differently affected defense responses in cladocerans of different body sizes. Both high and low temperatures moderated the intensity of the kairomone-induced response on body size at maturity. Additionally, low temperature reversed the reducing effect of fish kairomone on the total offspring number, average brood size, and reproductive effort in D. pulex. Conversely, it enhanced the increasing effect of fish kairomone on these parameters in C. cornuta. These results suggest that inducible anti-predator responses in cladocerans are modifiable by temperature. The differential effects of fish kairomones on various cladocerans under temperature influence offer crucial insights for predicting changes in predator-prey interactions within freshwater ecosystems under future climate conditions.

In this research, we aimed to observe the changes in myocardial fibrosis indices in patients with chronic heart failure before and after treatment and to evaluate the anti-chronic heart failure and ventricular remodelling effects of Trichosanthis peel (TP) injection. This study was a single-center, open, single-blind, randomized controlled study with an optimal efficacy design. Patients were consecutively and randomly divided into two groups, with 36 patients in the TP injection group and 36 patients in the conventional treatment group. ELISA was used to measure changes in myocardial fibrosis indices before and after discharge, including transforming growth factor ß (TGF-ß), serum hyaluronic acid (HA), type I procollagen (PCI), laminin (LN) and type III procollagen (PCIII). There was no significant difference between the two groups in clinical data or baseline level of myocardial fibrosis before treatment. After treatment, compared with the conventional treatment group, the myocardial fibrosis index was significantly decreased following TP injection. Our findings indicate that TP injection combined with conventional medicine can attenuate myocardial fibrosis by reducing angiotensin II, aldosterone, TGFß, HA, PCI, metallomatrix proteinase 2, connective tissue growth factor and LN and promote ventricular remodelling in patients with chronic heart failure.

Many real-world scenarios involve interfaces, particularly liquid-liquid interfaces, that can fundamentally alter the dynamics of colloids. This is poorly understood for chemically active colloids that release chemicals into their environment. We report here the surprising discovery that chemical micromotors─colloids that convert chemical fuels into self-propulsion─move significantly faster at an oil-water interface than on a glass substrate. Typical speed increases ranged from 3 to 6 times up to an order of magnitude and were observed for different types of chemical motors and interfaces made with different oils. Such speed increases are likely caused by faster chemical reactions at an oil-water interface than at a glass-water interface, but the exact mechanism remains unknown. Our results provide valuable insights into the complex interactions between chemical micromotors and their environments, which are important for applications in the human body or in the removal of organic pollutants from water. In addition, this study also suggests that chemical reactions occur faster at an oil-water interface and that micromotors can serve as a probe for such an effect.

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence of hepatitis A delivered a blow to public health decades ago. The World Health Organization (WHO) set a goal to eliminate viral hepatitis including hepatitis A by 2030. In 2008, hepatitis A vaccines were integrated into the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in China to alleviate the burden of hepatitis A, although the effectiveness of the EPI has not been well investigated. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the intervention effect at both provincial and national levels on the incidence of hepatitis A in the Chinese mainland from 2005 to 2019. METHODS: Based on the monthly reported number of hepatitis A cases from 2005 to 2019 in each provincial-level administrative division, we adopted generalized additive models with an interrupted time-series design to estimate province-specific effects of the EPI on the incidence of hepatitis A among the target population (children aged 2-9 years) from 2005 to 2019. We then pooled province-specific effect estimates using random-effects meta-analyses. We also assessed the effect among the nontarget population and the whole population. RESULTS: A total of 98,275 hepatitis A cases among children aged 2-9 years were reported in the Chinese mainland from 2005 to 2019, with an average annual incidence of 5.33 cases per 100,000 persons. Nationally, the EPI decreased the hepatitis A incidence by 80.77% (excess risk [ER] -80.77%, 95% CI -85.86% to -72.92%) during the study period, guarding an annual average of 28.52 (95% empirical CI [eCI] 27.37-29.00) cases per 100,000 persons among the target children against hepatitis A. Western China saw a more significant effect of the EPI on the decrease in the incidence of hepatitis A among the target children. A greater number of target children were protected from onset in Northwest and Southwest China, with an excess incidence rate of -129.72 (95% eCI -135.67 to -117.86) and -66.61 (95% eCI -67.63 to -64.22) cases per 100,000 persons on average, respectively. Intervention effects among nontarget (ER -32.88%, 95% CI -39.76% to -25.21%) and whole populations (ER -31.97%, 95% CI -39.61% to -23.37%) were relatively small. CONCLUSIONS: The EPI has presented a lasting positive effect on the containment of hepatitis A in the target population in China. The EPI's effect on the target children also provided a degree of indirect protection for unvaccinated individuals. The continuous surveillance of hepatitis A and the maintenance of mass vaccination should shore up the accomplishment in the decline of hepatitis A incidence to ultimately achieve the goal set by the WHO.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative evidence on the impact of meteorological factors on influenza transmissibility across different virus types/subtypes is scarce, and no previous studies have reported the effect of hourly temperature variability (HTV) on influenza transmissibility. Herein, we explored the associations between meteorological factors and influenza transmissibility according to the influenza type and subtype in Guangzhou, a subtropical city in China. METHODS: We collected influenza surveillance and meteorological data of Guangzhou between October 2010 and December 2019. Influenza transmissibility was measured using the instantaneous effective reproductive number (Rt). A gamma regression with a log link combined with a distributed lag non-linear model was used to assess the associations of daily meteorological factors with Rt by influenza types/subtypes. RESULTS: The exposure-response relationship between ambient temperature and Rt was non-linear, with elevated transmissibility at low and high temperatures. Influenza transmissibility increased as HTV increased when HTV < around 4.5 °C. A non-linear association was observed between absolute humidity and Rt, with increased transmissibility at low absolute humidity and at around 19 g/m3. Relative humidity had a U-shaped association with influenza transmissibility. The associations between meteorological factors and influenza transmissibility varied according to the influenza type and subtype: elevated transmissibility was observed at high ambient temperatures for influenza A(H3N2), but not for influenza A(H1N1)pdm09; transmissibility of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 increased as HTV increased when HTV < around 4.5 °C, but the transmissibility decreased with HTV when HTV < 2.5 °C and 3.0 °C for influenza A(H3N2) and B, respectively; positive association of Rt with absolute humidity was witnessed for influenza A(H3N2) even when absolute humidity was larger than 19 g/m3, which was different from that for influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and influenza B. CONCLUSIONS: Temperature variability has an impact on influenza transmissibility. Ambient temperature, temperature variability, and humidity influence the transmissibility of different influenza types/subtypes discrepantly. Our findings have important implications for improving preparedness for influenza epidemics, especially under climate change conditions.
